• General Scenario and Current Trend : Total geographical area of the state is 50.4 lakh ha, out of which 42.0 lakh ha is Net Sown Area.

    97% of the area is irrigated.

    1.52 lakh ha area is under soil alkalinity. Soil health is declining.

    SRR and VRR are yet to be achieved except for maize and cotton.

    As per 3rd Advance Estimates of 2008-09, productivity of rice is 4022 kg/ha, wheat 4450 kg/ha, bajra 1000 kg/ha, maize 3404 kg/ha, coarse cereals 3294 kg/ha, tur 1000 kg/ha, gram 1000 kg/ha, total pulses 826 kg/ ha, groundnut 667 kg/ha, rapeseed and mustard 1200 kg/ha, total oilseed 1258 kg/ha, sugarcane 61000 kg/ ha and cotton 737 kg/ha.



61,600 ha is under fruit plantation having productivity of 17.1 MT/ha. 1.7 lakh ha is under vegetable cultivation having productivity of 16.1 MT/ha. The state contributes 22% wheat, 12% rice, 10% cotton, 45% mushroom, 26% honey and 10% milk to the national production in these items.

Agriculture and allied sector contributes approx 30% to the state GSDP.

  • Strength:High productivity, 97% irrigated area, closer to bigger markets


  • Limitation: Low SRR and VRR, high consumption of fertilizer, low utilization of CSS funds.

  • Public Investment : State Government intervention in agriculture and allied sector was Rs.69.97 cr (1.83%) in 2005-06, Rs.142.99 cr (2.49%) out of Rs.5751.83 cr State Plan in 2006-07, Rs.142.64 cr (2.86%) out of Rs.4986 cr State Plan in 2007-08 and Rs.302.52 cr (4.87%) in 2008-09 out of Rs.6210 cr State Plan.

    Through major flagship programmes during 2007-08 GOI provided Rs.6.50 cr under MMA, Rs.36.05 cr under RKVY, Rs.4.27 cr under ATMA, Rs.24.09 cr under NHM and Rs.32.88 cr under NFSM.

    During 2008-09, Rs.87.52 cr under RKVY, Rs.0.30 cr under ISOPOM, Rs.17.50 cr under MMA, Rs.6.37 cr under ATMA, Rs.14.12 cr under NHM and Rs.35.69 cr under NFSM was provided to augment the efforts of State to increase production and productivity in the state.

    Thus, in the last two years of the 11th Plan period State Government spent Rs.445.16 cr for agriculture and allied sector and GOI provided more than Rs.265.29 cr for the sector.
